I made a pair of solid brass luthier thumb planes, with a design that is based on a Fibonacci spiral.
With these thumb planes being made out of solid brass, I had to make custom jigs to remove the portion that receives the blade and the lever cap.
Part I of this series (two parts) is concerned with making these jigs and removing the internal section of the plane. To this end, the planes start oddly shaped, but this was necessary to optimize workholding for finishing the internal section.
Part II shows making the lever cap, the handle, the irons, and finishing the outside shape of the planes.
