One of my most popular Youtube videos is the one where I teach “The Beast,” the most advanced scale exercise in my arsenal. I’ve had a lot of people ask about adapting it to 5-string basses, and now after years of telling people to figure it out themselves, I’m finally going to help you out a bit. :)

The key point in this lesson is this: If you understand the structure of an exercise, the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind it, then not only can you better master the exercise, but you’ll get a lot more out of it. And you have the potential to create other similar exercises for yourself based on the structure that you’ve internalized.

This point is so important to me as a teacher that I will continue to not put out written versions of this exercise for 5- or 6-string basses. If you’re advanced enough to be doing this exercise, then I officially assign you to understand the structure, not just learn the movements by rote. Anything else is doing yourself a disservice.
