This is a live performance of "Washington Square," performed live on the "Mike Douglas Show" in October 1967. Original Village Stomper trumpeter Frank Hubbell was performing with his band the Stompers. This video has been upscaled and the music equalized for best quality. Historical notes are below.
"Washington Square" by the Village Stompers reached #2 on the Billboard magazine Hot 100 singles chart in 1963. It was also #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart. It was topping the charts when President Kennedy was assassinated. This performance is from four years later, October 1967, when they appeared on "The Mike Douglas Show.
The Village Stompers were an American dixieland jazz group that hailed from Greenwich Village in New York City. An early incarnation of the group consisted of Dick Brady, Don Coates, Ralph Casale, Frank Hubbell, Lenny Pogan, Al McManus, Mitchell May, and Joe Muranyi.
"Washington Square" was their first and biggest hit. Other records that charted for The Village Stompers included "From Russia with Love," "The Bridge of Budapest," "Fiddler on the Roof," and "Moonlight on the Ganges."
