The politics of Waqf Amendment Act 2025, Explained | Maktoob

Two weeks ago, India’s Parliament passed the Waqf Amendment Bill, signed into law by the President.

Muslims, the country’s largest religious minority, call it a breach of trust, violating their constitutional right to religious freedom under Article 26.

Many label it a “genocidal project” by the ruling Hindu nationalist party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Now the Waqf Amendment Act, it’s sparked fierce opposition. Many took to the streets to protest the law, and now the country’s apex court is hearing dozens of petitions challenging the Waqf Act, 2025.

So, what is Waqf, and how does this Act discriminate against Muslims?
