Within hours, communication with the crew was lost. Within a week, the Swedish government sealed the entire mine with thousands of tons of concrete.

The "Great Silence" isn't just a theory about why the universe seems empty. Some silences aren't natural—they're enforced. For decades, we've been drilling deeper, breaking through layers of rock that have been sealed since the continents formed, disturbing things that were buried for reasons we're only beginning to understand.
