KS & CO Short Lines: Cimarron Valley RR and San Luis & Rio Grande in 2017!
Two unique regional railroads, which provided rail service in Colorado, were the Cimarron Valley Railroad and the San Luis & Rio Grande. The Cimarron Valley acquired the former Santa Fe Railway, Manter and Cimarron Valley subdivisions, from Burlington Northern Santa Fe in February 1996. Trains operated in Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado. Unique motive power included modified EMD GP30 units of Denver & Rio Grande Western, Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, and Chesapeake & Ohio heritage. The San Luis & Rio Grande operated freight and passenger trains over the former Rio Grande La Veta Pass Route between Alamosa and Walsenburg, Colorado, and east of Alamosa to Monte Vista. Operating in passenger service was former New Jersey Transit GP40FH-2 no. 4141, rebuilt from a former Rock Island GP40. Providing freight service were former Amtrak F40PH units, no. 227, rebuilt as an F40 slug, and no. 459, a rebuilt F40M-2F.
