It’s September 2024 and thanks to our colleagues at Network Rail we get to look inside the grade 2 listed ex Southern Railway electrical control room at Woking, one of five built for the electrification of the Southern Region during the 1930s
The control room with its art deco style layout took over control in 1936 with a further half added in 1937 in what from the outside is a very unassuming building, deliberately made so as it was a wartime target for enemy bombers .
Once a year the control is opened up to selected visitors and we were lucky enough to be allowed to see inside and we would like to thank all the demonstrators and our colleagues at Network Rail for allowing us to see inside and learn how the control worked.
A point to note please; the acoustics aren’t that great in the video, at the end of the day it’s a smooth walled curved room and very echoing, also the presenter is trying to present to the group and sometimes has to look away so the sound does drop off and we do get lots of other noise from the other groups and this was a visit as part of a large event so not a private visit just for us so we have to record around all those factors so whilst we apologise for the sound quality, it is what we have to work with on the day.
