Glue dates back to ancient times. The earliest known use of glue was by Neanderthals around 200,000 years ago, using birch bark tar to attach tools.
The first animal-based glues were used by the Egyptians around 3,000 BCE for woodwork and papyrus.
Modern synthetic glues began to emerge in the 20th century, especially with the invention of polyvinyl acetate (PVA) by Fritz Klatte in 1912, a German chemist.
