Hassan Hassanzadeh: It was in 1955 that a group of expert mountaineers proposed to the Mountaineering Federation to build a statue of a mountaineer. After the federation's decision, the then Tehran Municipality allocated about 10,000 Tomans to build the statue of a working foot.
The municipality approached Professor Reza Lal Riahi, a prominent professor at the university's Faculty of Fine Arts, to create the statue. Lal Riahi sought help from Colonel Bayat, the then head of the Army Mountaineering Federation, to introduce him to an elite mountaineer as a model.
Colonel Bayat also suggested Sergeant "Ghorban Ali Shah Ghadami", known as Amir Shah Ghadami, who was a paratrooper and mountaineering instructor at the Army's Ranger Training Center, to build the statue. The statue was built in 1958 and installed in Sarband Square.
But the weather conditions in northern Tehran soon caused serious damage to the plaster statue. Master Riahi set to work once again, this time making a 3-meter-tall statue of a mountaineer out of cement. The same statue has been standing in Sarband Square since 1962.
