The HORRIFIC Execution Of Hugh Faringdon - The Last Abbot Of Reading

During the reign of King Henry VIII, the 'Dissolutions of the Monasteries,' were a huge land and money grab that filled the King's treasury and made Henry richer than he already was. Henry had spent a lot of money on military campaigns and as he had become the Head of the Church of England he now decided to target monasteries, friaries, priories and all religious houses which he could steal money and land from. This event saw a huge shift in England with the King and Thomas Cromwell forcing out monks and nuns, and dissolving their Catholic ways of life.

Hugh Faringdon was the last Abbot of Reading Abbey, and throughout his life he remained close with Henry VIII. Despite being in charge of a Catholic Abbey, he helped and supported the King with his dispute surrounding his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Hugh was well respected by Henry and they were friends who exchanged gifts and went hunting together, but during the Dissolution of the Monasteries things would change.

Henry VIII seemed to trust Hugh, however Thomas Cromwell did not. Hugh Faringdon tried to win Cromwell over, however Cromwell kept persisting with trying to close down Reading Abbey and seize it's riches and wealth. Eventually Cromwell succeeded and Reading Abbey was closed, and Hugh Faringdon was arrested for treason. He was accused of preventing the Abbey from being closed and for refusing to support Henry VIII.

In front of a huge crowd in Reading, (his home town) Hugh was dragged through the streets and executed in barbaric fashion being hanged, drawn and quartered.
