Kosovo - Talks between US and Russia

US and Russian envoys compared notes in Kosovo on Friday (07/08), a day after Yugoslav gunners blasted two villages west of Pristina. Christopher Hill, the US ambassador to Macedonia and Washington's advisor on Kosovo, and Russian deputy foreign minister Nikolai Afanasyevsky met in a Pristina hotel before going into talks with Ibrahim Rugova, political leader of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority.

SOT Hill (English) SOT: "I had a good meeting with Dr Rugova, we discussed the istuation on the ground especially additional displaced people now moved in to northern towns in Ksovo. We also discussed where we are in the political process and about how that could lead to some solution in the short amount of time.";

SOT Afanasyevsky (English) , coming out of the Rugova's party building, English SOT: " We discussed about actual situation in the country, our assessment is that the last events in Kosovo, both offensive actions of armed groups of Albanians and the response of the Serbian security forces, proved with maximum evidence that there is no possible military solution to this problem. The only way is to resume immediately negotiations on the political peaceful solution of problems of Kosovo including status of the country and especially the solution of immediateproblems of the population and resumption of normal life."
