Three courageous D-Day veterans share their experiences from June 6, 1944. Tolley W. Fletcher, just 19 at the time, served as a gunner’s mate 3rd class on the USS NEW YORK, escorting ships to Casablanca and taking part in Operation Torch in North Africa before that pivotal day. On D-Day, his unit was tasked with escorting landing craft to Utah Beach.
Tech Sgt. Vito Mastrangelo, who was 20 years old, served in the 607th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company when he landed at Normandy. One of the most striking memories he has is of a jeep driver shot in the head.
Lt. Henry A. DuBay was also just 19 years old and piloted a C-47 on D-Day, skillfully carrying paratroopers into France. Their stories remind us of the bravery and sacrifices made on that historic day.
