𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬 || 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫 (𝐃𝐫) 𝐖. 𝐅. 𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐲𝐢

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬

1. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞
Even a hard-working and patient church can be found wanting if the internal motivation of love has diminished.

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬
The Lord acknowledges the "works," "labour," and "patience" of the church, as well as their intolerance for evil and false apostles.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭
Despite these outward successes, the Lord has a complaint: "thou hast left thy first love".

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
This "first love" is the fervent, undivided devotion a believer has at the beginning of their walk with Christ.

𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
Leaving this first love is described as a forfeiture of the most essential part of the Christian experience.

2. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡
A decline in spiritual love is not a minor slip but a "fall" that carries serious spiritual consequences.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫
Believers are told to "Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen".

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭-𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡
1 Timothy 5:12 warns of "Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith".

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤
If a believer or church does not return to their first love, the Lord warns, "I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place".

𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠
One can remain in the church and continue in "routine service" while having internally cast off the first faith and love.

3. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫
The remedy for a cooled heart is a specific three-step process of spiritual restoration.

𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫
The believer must consciously reflect on their former state of zeal and devotion to identify how far they have declined.

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐭
There must be a genuine turning away from the coldness and a return to the Lord with a "perfect heart".

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐭
Believers are commanded to "do the first works," returning to the practices of prayer, word study, and soul-winning that characterised their initial conversion.

𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Restoration requires "affectionate submission" and "absolute surrender" to ensure Christ is the unrivalled focus of the heart.
