Learn the story of Toshiko Noda, a traditional craftswoman in Minami-Ashigara, Kanagawa. Who took over her husband and family's work. She created thousands of artful design using traditional Japanese method of making lacquerware.
Urushi is a kind of lacquer collected from the lacquer tree in the rich forest and mountainous regions of Japan. It creates a very hard and durable finish, not through drying but by oxidation. It maintains its shiny and glossy state over the years by absorbing the moisture in the air. Urushi has been used for tableware, furniture, painting, jewelry and other objects from more than 10,000 years ago.
