PROPOSED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (BS ARCHITECTURE UNDERGRADUATE THESIS)

This project is from my undergraduate thesis titled “EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND CREATIVITY OF CHILDREN FROM PRIMARY SCHOOLS OF GENERAL SANTOS CITY”. The proposed project is called Eureka Elementary School. "Eureka" comes from the Ancient Greek word heúreka, meaning "I have found (it)". This is in line with the goal to provide a learning environment that offers experience-based techniques for problem-solving, learning, and discovery for the children.

Design Philosophy:
The proposed project focuses on upholding the design philosophy: creative learning beyond conventional boundaries. The main objective of the school is to extend and integrate the learning possibilities outside the traditional classrooms as well. Through incorporating creative learning in the three-dimensional space, the inherent curiosity of the children can be sparked to aid in fostering creativity growth among the learners.

Design Concept:
The form of the main building is inspired by the finger frame gesture, which uses the index finger and thumb of both of the hands to make a rectangle and allows one to look through it. This gesture represents the field of view. The field of view imposed by a child's immediate environment during the early years is a huge influence especially in terms of nurturing creativity. A narrow field of view may constrict one's thinking while a wider one increases the likelihood of imagination and exploration. With this, Eureka Elementary School is a learning environment designed to provide a wide-angle field of view that goes beyond the conventional boundaries and is ultimately conducive for children's creativity development. The learning facilities are not only limited to formal classrooms but also extend to specialized and outdoor creative learning spaces.
