Mount Mitchell: Exploring the WILD Side of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Come along for an epic exploration of Mount Mitchell in Charon's Garden Wilderness Area, my favorite part of the Wichita Mountains, Oklahoma.
We start our adventure at the Caddo Lake parking area along the main road through the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and head southwest over open country. After about a mile, we intersect with the Charon's Garden/Crab Eyes Trail and follow that for a distance until making a turn to the right.
After the turn we follow a creek that takes us to the north face of Mount Mitchell's summit. That approach is a little too feisty for my taste so I work my way to the west side of the mountain for a gentler approach.
Once on the top of Mount Mitchell, we'll see many cool rock formations and a burnt forest. There are several highpoints on the Mitchell massif, but I focus on the true summit, after a false start. The climb to the top wasn't too bad until the last few feet before the summit where I decided I had reached the end of my skill level and turned around.
The way down was no less beautiful than the way up, and it gives us plenty of things to explore.
