Buffyverse - What's the Soul?

This is less an answer to the question (or is it?^^) but rather a collection of statements that were made in the course of the show.

As I see it, the soul is not a simple bad/good compass, as it started out to be. And the personality of the human is NOT completely gone when the demon takes over. Angel said it himself ( :P ) and Spike and Harmony kinda proofed that. (Though, if I were Angel, I would worry :PP)
The soul is a moral compass, for sure, but I think it's a combination of the character you were before and the 'character' of the demon (I'm willing to believe that Angel's demon is much more agressive than Spike's ;)) that define what kind of vampire you are.
