This video features Ross Nickerson showcasing the ML-1 Gold Tone Baritone Banjo, or "Missing Link" banjo designed in collaboration with Bela Fleck. Ross talks about the unique features and sound of the banjo and demonstrates playing various songs on it.
Unique Tuning
The science behind it is that it's tuned to open C. If it were a regular banjo, C, or open C, it would be like you had the capo on the fifth fret. But now everything's an octave lower, so it has this really lovely deep sound. And all the strings on it are wound, which makes for an excellent sound.
Fun to Play
It's a fun banjo. I love it. I play everything on it, and to me, it sounds great. It's easy to make up new songs on it and songs you already know sound completely new and different
I like playing it in the morning; this banjo is an interesting instrument to me.
Song Demonstrations
Okay, maybe a good way to introduce this banjo would be to take a song that you might typically hear on a banjo, like Cripple Creek or something, which, you know, and play that. I also demonstrate on the ML-1, Keep on the Sunny Side, Greensleves, A Bluesy improv and a fast song I wrote called "Charge it Up" from a Gospel Concert I was performing at.
If you have any questions. You can always call me; I'm always happy to help.
