Luís Tomaz Pires told us he grew up in Portugal, where Julie Andrews memorabilia was rather scarce in the eighties and nineties.
As an avid fan, he kept scrapbooks with whatever he found in magazines and newspapers, long before the advent of internet. Later on, graphic books such as Arntz and Wilson's or the Japanese photo album would be treasured by him, before period memorabilia became widely available, ready to fill in drawers, boxes and walls.
One 2009 day he somehow finally acknowleged that no Julie Andrews book was as lavishly decorated as he had wished one to be, and therefore started to create a "dream scrapbook", but meant for his own fruition alone.
As work progressed Luís felt that other fans would probably appreciate this visual effort as well and decided to have it published as a very limited author's edition, which would eventually be known as "the Portuguese Book" in some Julie Andrews fan circles.
