Why do most highschools teach the American and French Revolutions everywhere, but skip the Haitian and Islamic revolutions of West Africa? Why are figures like Estebanico, Sayyida al-Hurra, and Makandal barely mentioned, when they shaped the same global history? Who decides what counts as important history?

This reflection is for those who feel the weight of being left out. These stories carry meaning for Muslims west of Mecca, for Black and Indigenous peoples whose histories are often seen as marginal, indeed for anyone who rejects the idea that history should only be written by the victors.

History is not only about who won. It is about who lived.
