Russian Plane Crash Antonov An-24 | Explained

On July 24, 2025, a tragic event unfolded in the remote Amur region of Russia involving an aircraft known as the Antonov An-24, often called the "flying tractor."

This nickname reflects its rugged design and remarkable ability to operate in harsh and challenging environments, characteristics that have made it a reliable workhorse across the vast, often unforgiving landscapes of Russia.

That afternoon, Angara Airlines Flight 2311 departed from the city of Blagoveshchensk, carrying 43 passengers, including five children, and a crew of six, bound for the town of Tynda, nestled near the border with China.

As the plane approached its destination, the weather rapidly deteriorated. Visibility dropped, clouds thickened, and rain complicated the flight. These poor conditions soon became a critical factor.

The crew initiated their first attempt to land at Tynda Airport but found the visibility too poor for a safe touchdown.

Exercising caution, they aborted the landing, climbing back into the sky in a maneuver known as a go-around, hoping to try again once conditions improved. Moments later, the Antonov prepared for a second approach.

During this subsequent attempt to land, air traffic control suddenly lost radar contact with the aircraft.

No distress signals were received, and the situation escalated rapidly from concern to tragedy.

Later, rescue helicopters located the wreckage roughly 15 kilometers from the airport, in a densely forested and hilly area. The plane was found burning, and, heartbreakingly, there were no survivors.

An official investigation was launched without delay to uncover the causes behind this fatal accident.

Preliminary findings have revealed that the crew made two landing attempts.

The first was aborted due to poor visibility, a decision reflecting the dangerous weather conditions.

The crash occurred on the second approach when the aircraft disappeared from radar.

Investigators have emphasized that adverse weather and poor visibility were central to t he tragedy, most likely disorienting the crew and complicating the landing procedures.

Beyond the weather, other factors are also under scrutiny, including the age of the aircraft.

The Antonov An-24 involved was a Soviet-era design powered by two turboprop engines, valued for its durability but aging by modern standards. Mechanical issues potentially related to the aircraft's age and condition remain an area of investigation.
