Hello, Dolly! needs no introduction, but a short refresher is always helpful. The show, written by Jerry Herman (score) and Michael Stewart (book) based on the play by Thornton Wilder, opened on January 16th 1964 after a somewhat troubled pre-Broadway tour to glowing reviews and quickly became the longest running show on Broadway. The piece was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and produced by David Merrick. Among the many stars who played the titular Dolly on Broadway were Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Bibi Osterwald, Pearl Bailey, Thelma Carpenter, Phyllis Diller and last but not least, Ethel Merman, but the original Dolly was Carol Channing.
Included here is the title song from a recording of the show made from the audience on July 31st 1964, less than 6 months into the run of the show, with the original Broadway cast intact (Charles Nelson Reilly, Eileen Brennan, Jerry Dodge, David Burns, and Sondra Lee, among others).
