A saltwater pool is a more convenient and healthy way to chlorinate the pool’s water because the chlorine is produced in a closed-loop with salt directly in the pool, eliminating the need to transport chlorine.

To help swimming pool owners, there are water pool generators available in different pool stores.

How many bags of salt do I need for a 15000-gallon pool? If you have 15000-gallon water of water, you will need nine bags of salt. But before adding salt, you need to determine first what is your salt level. You’ll know this if you check the salt chlorine generator owner’s manual.

In this article, we will list down steps on how to add salt correctly into your pool. We will also list the difference between saltwater and chlorinated pool and three types of pool salt.

Steps To Add Salt Into The Pool Water
If you’re a newbie to pool maintenance, like adding salt to the pool, it’s better to determine first your salt level.

As I’ve said, you can check it in the chlorine generator manual. But for you to be able to add salt properly, you can follow the steps below:

Salt levels in the pool generally operate between 3000 to 4000 ppm. If your salt chlorine generator operates at 3500 ppm, you’ll need to add enough salt to bring the salt level to 3500ppm.

Next is to determine what is the current salt level in your pool. If you have an older pool and need to convert to a standard chlorinator, it means that your pool has a low-level salt concentration. But if in case you just installed a new pool, remember that the salt level should be 0 ppm. Typically it’s around 500 ppm.

To measure your pool’s current level, you need to use a saltwater test strip. If you have an older pool, the reading will be around 2.0. The table on the test strip converts the reading to a salt level of 500 ppm.

But if there’s a pool store nearby, you can take a water sample to verify the measured salt level. Don’t worry because this service is generally free and is more accurate.

To determine how many pounds you’ll be needing to bring the salt level to 3500 ppm, calculate the number of gallons in your pool. For this one, if you have 15000 gallons of water and the current salt level is 500, you’ll need 375 lbs of salt. Or it is equivalent to 9 bags of salt; remember that there are 40lbs in every pool salt bag.

Pool experts recommend using a salt that is at least 99.8% pure sodium chloride or NaCl. The preferred salt is evaporated, granulated, Non-iodized salt, food quality. Meaning, you should avoid using salt with anti-caking agents such as sodium ferrocyanide or known as the Yellow Prussiate of Soda (YPS), because it can cause some discoloration of the fittings and your pool’s surface finishes.

Before adding salt, you should first turn off the Salt Chlorine Generator found in the Control Unit. Please do not turn it on until the salt has completely dissolved. But remember to leave the pump on so the water can circulate properly and dissolve the salt.

Pouring the salt directly into the skimmer isn’t recommended. For better results, you need to empty the required salt into the pool’s shallow end. Remember to let it dissolve and circulate through the main drain. The salt may take up to 24 hours to dissolve completely, but it'll dissolve faster if you use finer grades.

If the salt is already dissolved, turn on the salt chlorinator. Check if the salt level is at 3500 ppm, and you should maintain it around this level. If it lowers to 3000 ppm, the salt generator’s efficiency may result in low chlorine production. When the salt level is higher than 3500 ppm, it can rapidly reduce cell life.
