गहरी नदियां नाव पुरानी, खेवटिया है नादान
अलख पुरुष तेरे है घट अंदर, खेई के पार लगाई
In a powerful image from this song from Malwa, the creaky boat of our self heaves and lurches in the tumultuous waters of samsara, navigated by an inexperienced boat (god) man. Poet Dharamdas urges us to take the oars and be guided by the unseen spirit within our own selves!

Kaluram Bamaniya belongs to a vibrant tradition of singing bhakti poets such as Kabir, Gorakhnath, Bananath and Meera in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh in India. He started learning at the early age of 9, by accompanying his father, grandfather and uncle on the manjiras. When he was 13 years old he ran away from home and went to Rajasthan, where he absorbed a wide repertoire of songs from an itinerant Mirasi singer Ram Niwas Rao for 1-2 years.
