On Saturday, March 25, 2017 we decided to head up to Winter Park, CO to watch the Winter Park Express (WPE) for the last weekend of its season. Luckily for us the Moffat Sub saw a large amount of traffic that day.
As we watched the P-berg Local disappear into tunnel 49, an eastbound coal train, most likely off the North Fork Branch, received a new crew at Bond and started moving east. We caught up to it at Azure, where it went into the siding to allow Amtrak 6, the eastbound California Zephyr to pass by. This was an unusually short coal train with only 79 cars and 5 locomotives, one as mid train DPU, while most coal trains have 6-7 locomotives, with 3 as mid train DPUs. Also, I estimate this train to be about 4600-4700 feet, because the siding of Azure is 4900 feet and they really had to squeeze in. You can see in the video how close the headend is to the signal, and it was a similar distance at the rear. We caught the coal train again at Kremmling and between Flat and Byres Canyon.
Join us for part 4 where we move up to Winter Park to see the ski train and we catch this coal train one more time.
