An unhurried walk through the ancient remains of what was once the vast city of Gortyna, also known as Gortis or Gortyn. Inhabited for over 9,000 years, this area saw the rise and fall of many civilizations, from Neolithic peoples to the Minoans, and later the Romans, who built a “New Rome” here across approximately 3 km² (1.14 mi²). From that era, numerous archaeological sites remain: the Ancient Temple of Egyptian Gods, Temple of Apollo, Roman Praetorium, Roman Baths, Ancient Theater of Gortyn, Gortyn Amphitheatre, Ancient Stadium, Ancient Odeon, Roman aqueduct, and the Gortyn Law Code—carved into stone, considered the world’s first complete legal code. Atop the hill of Agios Ioannis lies the ancient acropolis.
