Pastor Roy Yamamoto found salvation in prison. Growing up in Pearl City, he had a troubled childhood. There was abuse at home and embarrassment at school, because he never learned how to read. He excelled at sports, but it was during his first year of playing college football that he was introduced to cocaine. “All of a sudden my career in drugs was more important,” said Yamamoto.
His drug use skyrocketed to a $1,000-a-day habit. He didn’t have that kind of money, so he resorted to crime to get his fix and was a repeat offender – convicted of extortion, kidnapping, robbery, assault and attempted murder.
Realizing the dead-end path he was on, Yamamoto decided to attend a bible study while he was behind bars. That would change his life.
