The Frontenac is a self-unloading bulk carrier that operates on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. Built in 1968, it was the last classic lake freighter constructed for Canada Steamship Lines. In 1973, it was converted from a gearless bulk carrier to a self-unloader, becoming the largest self-unloader of its time on the Great Lakes. The Frontenac also aided in the search for the Edmund Fitzgerald after it sank in 1975. In 1978, it carried the first cement clinker cargo by a Great Lakes freighter. The Frontenac followed the design of many other 730′ long Canadian laker ships build during the 1960’s. It’s a single rudder and single propeller ship. The Frontenac continues to be an active vessel in the Canada Steamship Lines fleet, hauling ore, coal, stone, grain, clinker, and salt cargoes.
