Can Homesteaders go on Vacation?

So many people have shared with us the woes of homesteading...
"If you get a cow, you'll never be able to leave",
"You'll be married to your cow/homestead"
"Well, apparently you don't like going anywhere!"
"You can never leave if you get animals!"
Well, obviously these statements are discouraging. So many people who live off the land get stuck and can't ever leave, let alone go on family vacations. We had no intention of this being the case for us, however, we haven't left the farm as a family in two years!!
We're not happy being part of that statistic, we want to do things differently, set ourselves up so that we don't get the common burnout syndrome. We've got a lot of work to do. Let's see how this goes.
