Flat Bodies - Expressive figures in a Minimalist, Folk-Inspired Style

Today we’re diving into the world of folk, abstract, minimalist, and geometric art, or as I like to say, simplified painting with personality.

We’ll explore how to use reference images without copying them, transforming what we see into expressive, stylised portraits that capture emotion. This approach draws inspiration from primitive art, linocuts, and modernist techniques, resulting in flat but deeply textured compositions.

We'll walk you through how to reinterpret subjects using bold shapes, negative space, and limited colour. While I’m using black-and-white acrylics on paper, you can adapt this technique with watercolours, oils, or any medium you like.

Whether you're a beginner exploring new styles or a more experienced artist seeking creative freedom, this technique helps loosen the grip of perfectionism and invites your personal voice to shine through.

We’ll also discuss the evolution of artistic identity. Why early artists often follow trends, and how more seasoned creatives develop a recognisable, authentic style. Think Picasso, Modigliani, Van Gogh, and Francis Bacon — artists who broke the rules to stay true to themselves.
