Capsid Bugs: Solve Distorted, Tattered Holes in Rose Leaves

Have you spotted torn, holey, distorted or tattered leaves on your rose plants? And are you unsure what may have caused these symptoms. Was it a beetle? A caterpillar? Or even a disease causing the problem on your rose plant? The most frequent culprits of wonky leaves and peppered holes on rose leaves are capsid bugs.

I show you how to identify the damage on roses caused by capsid bugs feeding on the young rose shoots, leaves and flower buds. The capsid bug you are most likely to find feeding on your rose plants is the common green capsid bug, known in Latin as Lygocoris pabulinus. This small apple green bug, with long legs and antennae is a master of disguise.

The sap sucking action and saliva of the feeding capsid bug damages the young plant cells. As the damaged cells expand they create the symptoms of distortion and peppered holes on the leaf.
