Devanagari Lyrics
Movie Storyline
Guide tells the story of Raju, a charming freelance tour guide who earns his living by showing tourists historic sites. His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Rosie, the beautiful but repressed wife of Marco, an obsessive archaeologist. Rosie is trapped in a loveless marriage where her husband dismisses her passion for dance as the legacy of her devadasi heritage. Raju becomes her confidant and encourages her to pursue her dreams. When Marco abandons Rosie in Malgudi after discovering their closeness, she seeks refuge with Raju. Despite his mother's disapproval, Raju becomes Rosie's manager and transforms her into a celebrated dancer. However, success corrupts Raju, who becomes greedy and controlling. He commits forgery involving Rosie's finances and is sentenced to prison. Upon release, a dejected Raju wanders to a remote village where he is mistaken for a holy man. When drought strikes, the villagers believe his fast will bring rain. Trapped between his fraudulent past and the villagers' faith, Raju undertakes a spiritual journey that leads to redemption and self-discovery.
Song Trivia
The song is over 8 minutes long, making it one of the longest dance sequences in Hindi cinema and the longest song in the Guide soundtrack.
It took 21 days to film this elaborate dance sequence at various locations including Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan.
The song was composed using Roopak Taal (7 beats), which was S.D. Burman's favorite rhythm pattern.
World-renowned Santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma played tabla for this song, and legendary flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia played the flute.
S.D. Burman recorded his own version of the song first before having Lata Mangeshkar record it, which was his usual practice to guide singers.
Movie Trivia
The film is based on R.K. Narayan's 1958 novel "The Guide." Interestingly, author R.K. Narayan was disappointed with the film adaptation and publicly criticized it.
S.D. Burman fell seriously ill while composing the music for Guide after completing just one song. Dev Anand refused to replace him and said he would wait or release the film with just one song if necessary. Burman recovered and completed what many consider the best soundtrack in Bollywood history.
The film's original lyricist was Hasrat Jaipuri, but he quit after a disagreement over the first line of "Din Dhal Jaye." Shailendra took over as lyricist and ironically kept the disputed line that became iconic.
Guide won 7 Filmfare Awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress, becoming the first film in Filmfare history to sweep all four major categories.
The film received 9 Filmfare nominations in total and was selected as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 38th Academy Awards, though it was not accepted as a nominee.
