This town, Wakimachi, is in the central part of Tokushima Prefecture, Japan.
During the Edo period, indigo cultivation flourished and the area developed as an indigo shipping port utilizing the water transportation of the Yoshino River.
Today, many of the merchant houses from those days remain in beautiful condition.
These buildings have firewalls called "udatsu" on their roofs, and the "udatsu" lining the streets create a beautiful townscape.
This area has been selected by the government as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
