This condition affects one in ten people and accounts for about 8% of all running-related injuries. In the USA alone, it's estimated that there are one million visits per year for treatment of plantar fasciitis.

The plantar fascia is a thick, fibrous band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes. Like a bowstring, it creates the arch of your foot and acts as a shock absorber. Sometimes, this tissue begins to degenerate, resulting in the condition known as plantar fasciitis or plantar fasciopathy (PF).
