Here, I travel up Route 3 from Huay Xai to Luang Namtha in northern Laos – its name means ‘Royal sugar palm’ or ‘Royal green river’. The town is actually split into two parts: The first is the older original part that’s centered around the airport that was bombed by the US in the 70s. The newer part was created in 1976 following the Vietnam War and features a small tourist area where you can find guesthouses, hotel, restaurants and a night food market. It's also a good base for exploring the many ethnic groups by trekking to local villages.
