This poem was inspired by a daily encounter with a street vendor selling a homeless newspaper "Augustin" in a subway station in Vienna. Amid the beautiful Art Nouveau arches and rushing commuters (blandly reproduced in the video by AI), the vendor's persistent yet unnoticed presence suddenly struck me deeply after years of simply passing by, prompting reflections on how easily we become numb to everyday struggles around us.
The concept of homeless people selling their street magazines is wide spread in countries around the globe. "The Big Issue", and "Trott-war" are just two examples besides the Vienna "Augustin".
This poem seeks to challenge our indifference and encourages us to truly see the people who have become invisible in our busy lives.
I can recommend the work by Melanie Zorn on the comparison of The Big Issue and Trott-war in Baden-Württemberg available here.
