PHO Rounds: Medi-spas: Head to Toe What You Need to Know

In this PHO Rounds, participants will develop their knowledge and skills to recognize the complexities of infection prevention and control (IPAC) lapses in personal service and other settings offering medical aesthetic services. This session will describe procedures and products offered by a variety of operators across these settings, outline known and potential adverse health outcomes beyond transmission of bloodborne infections and describe the applicable provincial legislation and the role of regulatory colleges.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the provincial legislation applicable in personal service and other settings offering medical aesthetic services and the role of regulatory colleges, including controlled acts and their delegation.
• Recognize the complexities of IPAC lapses related to these settings and outline known and potential adverse health outcomes beyond transmission of bloodborne infections.
• Identify challenges experienced by Public Health in conducting inspections of personal service settings including limitations in current legislation, complexities surrounding controlled acts, use of medical devices, and cosmetic products.
Presenter(s):
Lara Segan, MPH, CIC, has been a Policy and Program Advisor with the Ministry of Health since 2016. Her portfolio has focused on infectious diseases and surveillance, and has previously included opioid overdose surveillance, respiratory outbreak surveillance, regulatory changes related to reporting of diseases, and COVID-19 guidance for congregate living settings. She joined the IPAC team in 2023 and currently focuses on IPAC lapses. Lara has recently achieved her Certification in Infection Control (CIC©) and looks forward to continuing to learn about the field of IPAC and improving public health.
Dr. Maureen Cividino, MD, CCFP, FCFP, DOHS, CBOM, CIC, is a physician certified in family (FCFP) and occupational medicine (certified by the Canadian Board of Occupational Medicine). Dr. Cividino also has a Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and maintains her CIC© certification through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology. She provides IPAC physician support to PHO and works in occupational health in acute care.
Zorica Vujnic, BScN, MHA, CIC, is an Infection Prevention and Control Specialist at York Region Public Health with extensive experience in infectious diseases and infection prevention and control across diverse settings. She has led and supported numerous IPAC investigations spanning healthcare facilities, personal service settings, and other community environments. Zorica is deeply committed to excellence in public health and IPAC.
