The Comoros, an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa, consists of four major islands – Ngazidja, Mwali, Ndzouani, and Mayotte. Its varied geography includes volcanic islands with fertile soil supporting tropical crops. The Comoros has a rich history influenced by Bantu settlers, Arab traders, and European colonialism. French colonial rule began in the 19th century, and the Comoros declared independence in 1975 amidst political instability. Its diverse population predominantly practices Sunni Islam, speaks Comorian dialects, French, and Arabic. The economy, heavily reliant on agriculture, faces challenges due to inadequate infrastructure and reliance on remittances. The unique political structure involves a rotating presidency among the three islands to ensure equal representation. Despite political struggles, Comoros maintains a vibrant culture with African, Arabic, and Indian influences, reflected in its cuisine which blends these traditions into a distinctive Creole style.
