On the 3rd of April 2020, just over a month after South Africa had confirmed its first positive case of coronavirus, the minister of justice and correctional services, Mr. Ronald Lamola appointed Justice Kate O'Regan, as the COVID-19 designate judge to safeguard people's right to privacy in such an uncertain time. That appointment highlighted the significant role Kate’s work, past and present, continues to play in protecting human and civil rights and upholding the rule of law in all matters involving the citizenry. Justice O’Regan served at the Constitutional Court of South Africa for 15 years. She passed a number of key judgments and coauthored several works including one with Justice Albie Sachs titled S v Jordan which held that the criminalisation of sex work and not its solicitation unfairly discriminates on the basis of gender and is therefore unconstitutional.
