An inspiring story of a young dancer, her daily struggle with pain because of joint hypermobility and EDS, and how physical therapy has helped. Learn how this American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School student was diagnosed and the actions she has taken to ensure she can live her dream.
Joint hypermobility is commonly found in dancers, rhythmic gymnasts, and acrobats. It is one of the most prevalent symptoms that leads to their flexibility and grace. It can, however, become a challenge, leading to chronic pain, joint instability, dislocations, and a whole host of other medical issues.
Physical therapy is one component of the management process of this disorder. At Progressive Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, we offer customized treatment programs with Moria Docherty, DPT.
Being a former dancer, she has extensive experience and insight in order to evaluate and treat this complex issue. She earned a BFA in dance from the University of Arizona and received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from California State University Long Beach. Additionally, she has a Pilates apparatus accreditation with Body Arts And Science International (BASI) and is actively incorporating her skills in daily treatment sessions. She is currently a PT resource for the ABT Gillespe School at Segerstrom Center for the Arts
Moira also has a dance health blog, Health enPointe, with dietician and fitness expert Nasira Burkholder-Cooley that can be found at https://www.healthenpointe.com/about....
