14 dead as massive fire engulfs residential towers in Hong Kong | ABS-CBN News

At least 14 people died and an unknown number were trapped on Wednesday (November 26) after a massive fire engulfed multiple high-rise towers of a residential complex in Hong Kong's northern Tai Po district, the government said.

Firefighters battled the blaze into the night, with thick black smoke billowing from the 31-storey towers and orange flames lighting up the night sky.

The deputy director of the local fire department said that it was difficult to conduct firefighting and search operations as the temperatures in the burning buildings were so high.

Around 2:45, Harry Cheung, a 66-year old resident of the housing complex, heard a loud noticed one of the blocks was on fire. He noted that he had been outside for over 3 hours since packing his stuff and vacating his apartment.

Meanwhile, rescued residents gathered in temporary shelters following the said massive fire.

The Wang Fuk Court housing complex, where the fire started, is home to 2,000 residential apartments, comprising eight blocks. The Fire Services Department told Reuters it does not yet have a figure for the number of people who may still be inside the buildings.
