Today I am explaining the process of traveling with your pet from the US to another country.
Keep in mind that under certain circumstances, certain countries or airline carriers would not accept pets. Also, country requirements can change frequently making very important to get all the information before you plan your trip.
Traveling with your pet internationally can be a very stressful process, some countries have requirements that take time and planning and if you don’t pay attention may run out of time. It is important to start the process as soon as you know you are going to travel.
First, there are the requirements of the country of destination and second the airline requirements.
I recommend that as soon as you know you are going to travel, you look at the USDA / APHIS website (https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-...) where you can find information for each country and make an appointment with a veterinarian that does international travel certificates and is USDA accredited. This veterinarian will be able to obtain the necessary information and make a plan to get everything done on time. Keep in mind that during this process you may need more than one visit to the veterinarian.
When you go to your veterinarians appointment, bring your pet's medical history, including vaccinations and treatments. Each country will have its own requirements, but if you are traveling with a dog or a cat it is very common they will ask for 3 things:
First, your pet would require to have a microchip. There are several types of microchip, the most commonly required to travel internationally is the ISO chip. The microchip has to be implanted before or the same day the pet is vaccinated for their first rabies vaccine, otherwise the Rabies vaccine will not be valid.
Second, the Rabies vaccine has to be up to date. If is not up to date, your pet would have to be vaccinated and will not be allowed to travel for the following 21 days.
And third, less common, but some countries require your pet to be dewormed 1-5 days prior to travel. This has to be done and documented on the International Certificate by the USDA accredited veterinarian.
Once the veterinarian examines your pet and verifies that has everything needed to travel will be able to fill out and sign the documents. Depending on each country requirements, but in the majority of the cases all the required forms will have to be sent to one of the USDA offices to be endorsed, once this is done the forms will have to be returned to the owner on time for travel. These forms are valid for 10 days from the veterinarian signature.
And last there are the airline policies. Call directly to the airline you are going to travel with, since they can vary from different companies. Ask whether your pet can travel with you or if must travel in the cargo area, how many animals one person can bring, what kind of carrier you need, medical requirements and cost.
Make the reservation for your pet in advance, the airlines only accept certain number of pets in the plane and once they reach that number they will not accept more.
