Riding the Southwest Chief across America has been on my railfan "Bucket List" for quite some time. I was finally able to experience the historic route from Los Angeles to Chicago in late March 2025. A railroad route rich in history that intertwines with the classic Route 66 Highway.
It was quite the 50 hour trip, however......!!!!
Started out great, on time up until Barstow then it all went South... During the night the second engine AMTK 22 had HEP and loading issues! A rescue BNSF GEVO was added in Winslow, AZ that next morning. This issue along with crew hours of service and track maintenance in the Midwest caused us to be 7 hours late into Chicago!
All said and done, It was a cool experience... my favorite part was going over Glorieta Pass in New Mexico! Very scenic with classic searchlight signals and sections of un-welded rail!
