In this week's video, I'm taking you on a journey through Oregon's high desert, riding the historic State Route 218 from Antelope to the captivating ghost town of Shaniko. This stretch of road is a dream for any rider, with its sweeping views, rolling hills, and the kind of wide-open spaces that make you feel like you're the only person for a hundred miles. The ride itself is a blast, but the destination is what really makes this an unforgettable trip. We'll be pulling into Shaniko, a town that was once a booming hub for wool and wheat, earning it the nickname "Wool Capital of the World."
The history here is tangible, and it's like stepping back in time with the old Shaniko Hotel and other historic buildings still standing. But Shaniko isn't just a relic of the past; it's a living, breathing community that celebrates its heritage. I was not lucky enough to time my visit for "Shaniko Days," an annual event that brings the town to life with reenactments, live music, and a taste of the old west. When planning your ride to Shaniko you could try to plan to be there during "Shaniko Days," but any day is a great day to be in Shaniko.
Stick around after the ride portion of the video as we explore the dusty streets, soak in the history, and experience the modern-day charm of this incredible Oregon ghost town.
