Chad provides a thorough lesson on Alkyne Synthesis (i.e. the preparation of alkynes). He shows how alkynes can be synthesized from either geminal dihalides or vicinal dihalides in two successive E2 elimination reactions using excess NaNH2 (sodium amide) as the base followed by protonation with water. He first reviews dehydrohalogenation of alkyl halides to form alkenes to then show that dihalides can undergo dehydrohalogenation twice to form alkynes. Chad includes a detailed mechanism for alkyne synthesis and explains why terminal alkynes are likely to form when using NaNH2.
