As rays from the sun stretched across Vietnam’s lush landscape, seven men of a joint American-Montagnard tribesmen MACV-SOG Commando team inserted into two UH-1D Hueys, with the support of six Cobra gunships. This elite unit was on a classified mission in the Kontum province of Vietnam. Once inserted into the jungle, they continued on foot to patrol deeper into enemy territory and searched for an intelligence aircraft that had been shot down in the area. The team's second objective was to gather information on a North Vietnamese Army base from which American surveillance teams had previously intercepted dozens of radio transmissions.
Leading this team was a cold-blooded killer, Franklin D. Miller. Miller, who had been scouting ahead of the rest of his team, spotted an NVA patrol sitting in thigh deep grass. After counting over 30 of them, he quickly melted back into the jungle to return to his team and report mission status to their forward air controller circling above. All was going well according to plan through the early morning. Within hours, the mission went sideways and Staff Sergeant Miller would spend the rest of that fateful day fighting for the survival of his seven-man team…
