Coimbatore often called Kovai, is a significant metropolitan city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Situated on the banks of the Noyyal River and encircled by the Western Ghats, Coimbatore is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu by population, following Chennai, and the 16th largest urban area in India according to the 2011 census. It serves as the administrative capital of Coimbatore District and is governed by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, established in 1981.

During the Sangam period, between the 1st and 4th centuries CE, the Cheras ruled the region around Coimbatore. It functioned as the eastern entrance to the Palakkad Gap, the main trade route between the west coast and Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore lay along the ancient trade route Rajakesari Peruvazhi, extending from Muziris to Arikamedu in South India. The medieval Cholas conquered the Kongu Nadu in the 10th century CE. The Vijayanagara Empire ruled the region in the 15th century, followed by the Nayaks, who introduced the Palayakkarar system, dividing the Kongu Nadu region into 24 Palayams. In the late 18th century, the Kingdom of Mysore controlled Coimbatore until the British East India Company annexed it to the Madras Presidency in 1799 after Tipu Sultan's defeat in the Anglo-Mysore Wars. The Coimbatore region was notable in the Second Poligar War (1801), with Dheeran Chinnamalai leading operations.

In 1804, Coimbatore became the capital of the newly formed Coimbatore district, and in 1866, it was granted municipality status with Robert Stanes as its chairman. The city experienced a textile boom in the early 19th century due to the decline of Mumbai's cotton industry. Post-independence, Coimbatore has rapidly industrialized and is now a major exporter of jewelry, wet grinders, poultry, and auto components. The "Coimbatore Wet Grinder" and the "Kovai Cora Cotton" are recognized as Geographical Indications by the Government of India. Due to its textile industry prominence, the city is known as the "Manchester of South India."

In 2014, Coimbatore was ranked as the best emerging city in India by India Today, fourth among Indian cities for investment climate by the Confederation of Indian Industry, and 17th among the top global outsourcing cities by Tholons. It has been chosen as one of the Indian cities to be developed under the Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT by the Government of India. Coimbatore consistently ranks among the top ten best cities to live in India and is considered one of the safest cities for women according to a 2015 report by the National Crime Records Bureau.

Coimbatore has six major arterial roads: Avinashi Road, Trichy Road, Sathy Road, Mettupalayam Road, Palakkad Road, and Pollachi Road. The Coimbatore bypass consists of a series of bypasses that connect various National and State Highways passing through and originating from the city. The first section of the bypass, a 28-kilometre (17 mi) stretch from Neelambur to Madukkarai on National Highway 544, opened in 2000. This was South India's first road privatization project implemented on a build–operate–transfer model.

In 2008, the State Highways department proposed creating a Ring Road to reduce congestion on the main arterial roads. The 12 km road would extend from Peelamedu to Mettupalayam Road. In 2011, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu announced the construction of two new flyovers at Ukkadam and Athupalam to alleviate congestion on Palakkad Road. In 2012, the Government of Tamil Nadu decided to build an eastern road connecting Mettupalayam Road with Avinashi Road and the existing bypass. The city municipal corporation is also constructing six rail-over-bridges. Additionally, five National Highways pass through Coimbatore.

In addition to the State and National Highways, the Coimbatore city corporation maintains a road network that spans 635.32 kilometres (394.77 miles). The city is also served by auto rickshaws and taxi services. Coimbatore has four Regional Transport Offices: TN 37 (South), TN 38 (North), TN 66 (Central), and TN 99 (West).
