Elvis early years in Memphis. Where did Elvis live in Memphis, where were Elvis homes in Memphis? Most of Elvis's houses in Memphis are long gone. This vlog shows where Elvis lived in Memphis & where Elvis went to school in Memphis. Elvis first home in Memphis was at 370 Washington. Elvis moved to Memphis in November 1948 and this was the Presley family first home. 370 Washington no longer exists. Before too long the family had moved around the corner to the next property, Elvis home at 572 Poplar Ave where they lived in less than ideal conditions! Elvis home at 572 Poplar Ave no longer exists. After a visit from Memphis Housing Authority the Presley family - Elvis mother Gladys Presley, Elvis father Vernon Presley and Elvis grandmother Minnie Mae (Elvis called her Dodger) - finally qualified for housing at the new Lauderdale Courts complex that was built as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal. The family were definitely taking a step up from Poplar and the family had their own kitchen and bathroom separate from other families. Elvis lived here at Lauderdale Courts for the longest time apart from Graceland. We were lucky to stay inside Elvis Lauderdale Courts home in 2017 and include clips here (see our complete guide to Lauderdale Courts in our 2017 playlist, link below). Inside Lauderdale Courts is an insight in to how Elvis lived from 1949 to 1952. When Gladys Presley returned to work at St Joseph's Hospital following Elvis falling asleep in Humes High School because of Elvis job at MARL Metal Manufacturing Co, the Presley family income rose above that allowed as part of their tenancy and the Presley family once again were on the move. Initially moving to a rooming house at 698 Saffarans which was handy for Elvis as close to Humes High School. Elvis home at 698 Saffarans no longer exists. After just approx 6 weeks they moved to 462 Alabama where they shared a home with the Fruchter family. Life for Elvis at 462 Alabama was eventful. While living at 462 Alabama, Elvis met Dixie Locke, Elvis recorded his first demo at Memphis Recording Service, Elvis recorded his first Sun single That's All Right and Blue Moon Of Kentucky, Elvis first concert at Overton Park Shell (Elvis first professional show), Elvis first Louisiana Hayride show and Elvis first and only Grand Ole Opry show.
So it was 6 November 1948 the Presley family arrive in Memphis. And they settle in to 370 Washington,
Vernon was soon to start work for Precision Tool company down on Kansas down in South Memphis, and Elvis enrolled at Humes High school.
Presley family were living at 370 Washington paying $11 a week rent. They moved to 572 Poplar So things not looking much better in Memphis than they had in Tupelo.
They moved there in May '49 and that's where they remained until they were accepted by the Tennessee by the Memphis Housing Authority into the Lauderdale Courts buildings in September 49. that window was actually Elvis's bedroom. Vernon and Gladys lived at 185 Winchester, apartment 328 from October 1949, to January 1953. Elvis liked to sing and play guitar. Elvis volunteered to sing at teenage dances Johnny Burnette founder of the Rock and Roll Trio sometimes refused to let Elvis perform. The Presleys moved in 1953
Bill Black also lived in the Courts
Lauderdale Courts were built in 1936 by the federal emergency administration of Public Works.
Part of Market Street was converted to green space and the Memphis Housing Authority selected families based upon financial need.
Elvis had taken a job in September at the MARL Metal Manufacturing Company Gladys was forced to return to St.Joseph Hospital So they had 'Notice of Eviction' in November of 1952 and by January 1953 they were living on Saffarans up by Humes. Humes High School. Elvis attended from November 1948 when the Presleys arrived in Memphis through to the summer of summer of '53.
Now this here is Alabama Avenue, And Elvis moved here in March 1953,
The Presley family moved in March 1953 - moved in with the Fruchter family.
And in April of 1953 Elvis was in the annual minstrel show. It was while living here at Alabama that Elvis recorded the demo record in the summer 1953 of course the first demo record at Sun, the second demo in January 1954,
and of course the start of Elvis's career in July of 1954 when Elvis recorded at Sun, That's All Right (Mama), Blue Moon Of Kentucky all that happened while Elvis was living here at 462 Alabama.
