After our Slovenia Alpe Adria Trek, we were keen to continue hiking. One of the highlights was a short trek to the Skocjan Caves from Divaca. Located in the Karst region, the caves are the first monument in Slovenia to be included on the UNESCO list of natural and cultural World Heritage Sites (the largest caves in Europe!). When we reached the massive gorge, we discovered an additional trail - the Educational Loop - which we highly recommend doing prior to the cave tour. Here you will visit several buildings housing unique artifacts, as well as displays featuring the biology and geology of the area. We learned a lot about how the caves were formed and the delicate ecosystem that is strictly protected. Some visitors were disappointed that pictures weren't allowed on the 1.5 hour guided tour, as the lights from phones and flashes from cameras are disruptive to the the bat population. But, if you opt for the 3rd of 3 exits from the tour, you will be gifted to additional spectacular views within the caves where pictures are allowed! Be aware though, Exit 3 is long! The distance and challenges of the ups and downs in the guided tour might deter you from taking Exit 3, but we highly recommend this option. Plan for a very long day if you decide to do all of the above.
