Levels Advisor Robert Lustig, MD, explains what happens to circulating glucose after a meal and why it matters.
Understanding circulating glucose
Every cell on the planet burns glucose for energy.
When you eat, 20% of the glucose goes to the liver, leaving 80% circulating in the bloodstream.
Of the circulating glucose, 20% goes to your brain. The rest goes to all the organs in your body, including your muscles.
The cells of these organs will extract the glucose they need and leave the rest if there’s some left over.
Your body will need to clear the rest with insulin.
Insulin places excess glucose into fat cells for storage.
What you can do: Minimize glucose spikes to minimize insulin release.
